Today’s culture has grown antagonistic towards any distinction of the sexes and God-given gender roles often mislabeling such views chauvinistic sexist or oppressive. This controversy has made its way into the church and is divided along the lines of egalitarianism and complementarianism. Egalitarianism argues that men and women are created equal in both worth and function and there are no divinely imposed restrictions on leadership positions in the church. Complementarianism affirms all are created equal in worth and God has ordained certain distinct gender roles. This battle is currently ripping some denominations and churches apart, so it is important that we have a biblical understanding of what God has said, because right doctrine unites when we submit ourselves to the teaching of God’s Word.
